Lets face it, one of the muddier aspects of being a (hardcore?) gamer is the plethora of rumors that circulate throughout our media. The advent of the internet has given us access to instant news, but has also opened the floodgates to instant rumors, speculations, and hoaxes. While some rumors and info are blatant hoaxes and are quickly dismissed as such, others are occasionally given creedence- only to be exposed as cruel fabrications.
So, now is the time to reminisce about infamous gaming hoaxes throughout the years...
My fave is the one in which Luigi was supposed to be a hidden playable character in Mario 64.
Most memorable hoax for me would be that infamous Sheng Long code for SF2 which EGM started as April Fools joke.
I remember all the people at the arcade trying to get S.L...
Also, Marvel vs Capcom 3 info posted at Madman's Cafe this year was pretty good too.
The Mortal Kombat series boasts a TON of false rumors. And everyone knew a guy who knew a guy who got these to work...
-MK2: Kano and Sonya were hidden characters. If you played as Jax on the "arena"(?) background, do a doouble-flawless fatality and Kano will break free and fight you.
-MK3: Nudalities- even though finding nude pictures of Kerri Hoskins was quite easy since she was a former Playmate.
-MK3: Jago of KI is a hidden character
-The rumor that MK3 was going to be running on the "Ultra 64" hardware
-Sheng Long. Immortalized for all time. The reality(Akuma) will never live up to the legend.
-The "revive Aeris" rumor in FF7
-The infamous SF2 "boss code"
-MK2 "Animalities" and other assorted tricks(though I swear I saw a Rayden fatality where he called out Kid Thunder and pounded on him, however you couldn't see it)
-KI proclaimed the first N64 title
-The "Project Reality" demostations that were actually SGI stations hidden underneath the tablecloths
-All the crazy rumors for SF3 before it was finally released
Originally posted by Nash i hated the original street fighter 2 for the super nes boss code hoax. it was so good/bad, that people would lie about it.
"yeah, i got it to work. i can play as sagat."
"can you show me how it's done?"
"naw man, you're gonna have to find out for yourself."
unbelievable.
This happened to me recently with someone's little brother.
"Dude, one of my friends got Sonic and Tails in Melee."
"Oh really? How is it?"
"I dunno, I just saw it though. It was cool."
"And you didn't want to play as them?"
"Nah, I had to get home."
"Oh, okay. Well, how'd he do it?"
"I didn't watch him do it, I just saw he had Sonic and Tails."
"Why don't you go over and get his memory card now, so I can play as them?"
"I think he sold his Gamecube."
"You're 12. How old is your friend that he's selling his Gamecube?"
"His mom did it."

I just gave up.
LOL
Funniest thing I've read all day.
As a sidenote, I pissed someone off to the point that they almost hit me when I called them on the boss code for SF2 back in the day.

I have heard so many it wasn't funny. I remember guys saying that they found hidden stuff and they would make up a huge list of requirements to get it to work. I would double check their info and ask them again and then they would say that it would only work on the test machines at "Enchanted Castle".
Enchanted castle was the premiere test location for MK2, since Midway is located in the burbs of chicago. That arcade had roughly 15 MK2 machines back in the day.
But never the less, I laugh now but got mad as hell back in the day for them not sharing...

I knew a few kids who loved lying about all sorts of games, so I've got pathetic lies and rumours about videogames that were never mentioned in magazines. Hell, one of them even managed to come up with the secret origin for Captain Planet, that one was so reaching I struggled to not laugh hysterically at him.
One of my favorite ones was someone trying to convince me that Roll was playable in Megaman (the first one), but it involved an alternate path as you're given a choice later on. I had beaten it already, but he refused to listen to me. He even had a friend backing him up on this.
Some cock-gobbler I knew in 5th grade *sold* false MK2 codes to other classmates for $1 each.<BR>
To add icing to the cake, he had the audacity to tell me that I'm a lying sack of shit for beating Samurai Shodown arcade. (That game was cheaper and IMHO more fun)

Hey! I made good money off those fake, errr, quality codes
I remember back in the Gamego forums, a post your rare games thread. This one guy said he had a dev. copy of Half-Life for the Dreamcast. A bunch of people were asking him to burn a copy. He said he could'nt do it, as the guy who gave it to him would get in trouble. He said that there was a tracking number in the program, that the developer could use, if pirated copies were found of the disk. People were calling the guy an asshole, and other things. Most thought the guy was full of it.
